  2008 Olympics at SMA: An Adventure in Reading and Writing!

(For students entering grades K-7)

Join us as we bring the 2008 Olympics to Stella Maris Academy in an Olympic themed adventure in reading and writing!  This two-week class will focus on improving reading and writing skills while integrating technology. Students will be divided into primary, intermediate, and advanced groups. All students will collaborate on an exciting culminating Olympic themed project! The primary group will focus on the foundations of phonics/writing skills and provide enrichment opportunities for the beginner reader. The intermediate group will continue to practice and develop reading and writing skills.  In the advanced group, specific focus will be given to the five-paragraph essay, non-fiction reading strategies, and presentation skills.

What is your learning style? Do you study actively? How do you take tests? This course will pursue a variety of questions such as these.  Students will learn ways to make information more meaningful, thus more memorable.

They will learn:

·strategies for recalling information more quickly.

·the vital skills of studying and test taking. 

·study guidelines that will enhance home reviewing for tests. 

·note taking strategies.

·questioning techniques to improve review.

·how to create games to make studying fun!
